Digital Press Explained

In a true photographic print the colours and densities are produced by dyes being produced in the layers of the paper as a reaction to light in a chemical process.

In press printing the colours and densities are produced by inks ( Cyan, Yellow, Magenta and Black, this is why it is sometimes called CYMK with K being used for black to make a difference from B for Blue ) being placed onto the paper in minute patterns by a printing press. The eye confuses these patterns into shapes and colours when viewed from a certain distance.

The main advantage is a reduction in cost when compared to true photographs but also different paper stocks can be used to allow a lighter less informal book that still has high image quailty.
